It’s hard to know which wine to choose for a first date. Here are some tips to help you to subtly impress… First dates can be a very cautious business. Whether you have met through friends, or through the ever increasingly popular online dating, so much can seem to hang on that first impression, including your choice of wine. A bottle of wine can be an ideal choice of drink for a first date. Shared between you it contains the perfect amount of alcohol as you’ll find yourselves considerably less nervous but not too inebriated. So you have agreed on wine… but which one? Due to the habit, particularly on first dates, of reading far too much into everything, you may wish to tread carefully here. The Cost Don’t just go for the most expensive one on the list and hope for the best. How much you spend should not be a key consideration when dating and it’s best not to use money as a tool to impress. The most expensive wine is also not necessarily the best or the most appropriate choice for the occasion. Though, also do not simply choose the house red – a happy medium should be aimed for in terms of cost. The Meal What you’re eating has always been a factor affecting wine choice; traditionally white wines are matched with fish or chicken and red with darker meats. However, do not let this limit your choice too greatly. Why not choose a Chardonnay for lighter meats and the richer Shiraz for beef and fuller meats? More information about matching food and wine can be viewed here. The Season The time of year is a further consideration. White and rosé wines would be appropriate for the warm summer months whereas a full red warms the bones in the depths of winter. But, all of these aspects considered, you also need to avoid dwelling for too long on the decision. It would not be advisable to parade your knowledge of wine too loudly during the perusal of your menu. It would be equally rude to order before your date has agreed to what they’re drinking. So, overall, what wine should you choose on a first date? All aspects considered, the Chateauneuf du Pape is my personal recommendation. This wine middles in terms of price and tends to be very drinkable wherever you buy it. Its French origin lends romantic connotations to the choice and will meet most tastes so it’s a very safe bet. The rest of the date is down to you… Good luck! Take the time of year, how much you’re spending and what you’re eating, jumble it all together and you should be able to narrow down the competition and find the perfect wine for your first date to start swimmingly. |
